Temporary Fosterer - Kent

Opportunity image

We need kind, dog loving people who will provide short term care for our younger dogs who are towards the end of their training but need a temporary home until they move on to work with their client and form an assistance dog partnership. This could be for one week or several months depending on charity needs.

What do we need you to do? We need you to give a safe and loving home to an older pup who is close to completing its training. We would need you to regularly drive to meet one of our instructors. The dog would spend the day training and you would collect the dog at the end of the working day. We would need you to follow our training plans and rules of good practice. We need you to have a safe and secure home and garden. You must have a driving licence and access to a vehicle. Lots of dog experience is NOT necessary but you need to be very comfortable around dogs. We are very happy if you have other pets at home but they will need to be assessed before we can place a dog with you. We don't ever want to cause upset to your pets. We don't like our dogs to be left home alone for more than 4 hours at one time. We can't accept any smokers within the household as this can affect the dog's nose.

How would I benefit? You would very quickly become a valued member of our Medical Detection Dogs family. There would be no financial cost as we will supply everything you might need. We just need your time and commitment. You will have access to a 24 hour emergency helpline. You will have lots of fun and a chance to meet new people. You will regularly be kept up to date with the work of the charity and be invited to join in lots of events if you like that sort of thing.

What happens next? Once you have completed your application form, we will be in touch to arrange a time for you chat online with a volunteer who has been undertaking this role for a long time. This will be a chance to find out all the great things but also the more challenging aspects of the role. We will arrange a mutually convenient time for our instructor to visit your home with one of our dogs to chat further about the role. We will contact your referees. Once we have the references back, you will receive our Welcome Pack and we will arrange your first day with us.
